OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE JOZINI SMALLHOLDER FARMER PROGRAMME
In a significant stride toward agricultural transformation and rural empowerment, the official launch of the Jozini Smallholder Farmer Programme took place in the heart of Ndumo B, Jozini, under the Umkhanyakude District Municipality on 11 April 2025. This transformative event brought together National, Provincial Government, and private sector stakeholders in the commitment to inclusive agricultural development.
Market access has long stood as a barrier for many farmers, especially those historically disadvantaged. In response, the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) through the Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (RASET) introduced an inclusive model designed to tackle socio-economic inequality in the agricultural sector by supporting women, youth, and people with disabilities.
At the heart of this initiative, a powerful collaboration was showcased as the National Minister of Agriculture, Mr. John Steenhuisen, Deputy Minister Ms. Nokuzola Capa, and KZN MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, joined forces with Unilever Southern Africa CEO, Mr. Justin Apsey, to hand over essential agricultural equipment aimed at uplifting youth-led agribusinesses and boosting agricultural growth in Jozini.
Furthermore, through this partnership, 100 smallholder farmers from Ndumo, Makhane, Mahlabeni, and surrounding areas have received specialized training in herbs and spices cultivation. The goal is to equip these farmers with the skills and opportunities to become formal suppliers through offtake agreements laying the foundation for long-term economic sustainability and self-sufficiency. This programme is more than just farming it is about building livelihoods and strengthening local economies.
The day also featured a vibrant exhibition of agricultural products, showcasing local innovation and enterprise. Notably, the Agribusiness Development Agency (ADA) managed project, Ntingwe Tea, took part in the exhibition, proudly displaying its premium tea products and reinforcing the role of inclusive agribusiness in uplifting rural communities.
